Lithuanian-American scientist explores origins of universe |
Even though the Big Bang that gave birth to time itself happened 13.7 billion years ago and scientists can only guess what happened in its wake, there is a slight chance to glance at one of the first phenomena in the universe. Scientists at NASA are currently working on complex technology required for the endeavour and among them is Jonas Žmuidzinas, a 52-year-old Lithuanian-American astrophysicist. |

His story warrants a cinematic treatment. At eight, together with his mother and two sisters, he fled to Germany, to escape the Red Army; at thirteen, he came to the United States. He grew up without a father, worked hard and studied all his life. At 76, Romualdas KriauÄiÅ«nas was awarded by the Ministry of Education and Science of Lithuania for his life-long achievements in promoting science. |

R&D spending grew in 2011 |
Despite the painful austerity and the shortening of budgets in the Lithuanian economy, there is one bright spot in the spending horizon. Today, Statistics Lithuania reported that the country’s spending on research and development (R&D), a crucial factor in innovation and value-added products, grew to 0.92% of GDP in 2011. Lithuanian innovations at ‘Electrolux’ |
Two design works by second year students of Vilnius Academy of Arts got into an annual household appliance concepts competition ‘Electrolux Design Lab’ semifinals, vz.lt reported on 3rd August. From more than 1,200 projects submitted to the Swedish manufacturer of home appliances competition, a device ‘Salt Spoon’ by Barbara Adamonytė and Vilius Dringelis work ‘Fridge Nose’ were selected to top 30. |
